Healthy Roots are the beginning of a secure lifetime.
When children have healthy roots, they are better equipped to grow into confident, resilient, and emotionally healthy adults. Nurturing those roots early can make a lasting difference in how a child understands themselves, manages life's challenges, and connects with the people around them.
Parenting is one of the most meaningful jobs we will ever have, but it can also be one of the most challenging. When your child is struggling with anxiety, big emotions, behavior concerns, school difficulties, family changes, or something you can't quite put your finger on, it can be hard to know what they need or how best to help.
I believe parents and caregivers are an essential part of a child's support system. My role isn't simply to work with your child for an hour each week. I want to help you better understand what may be happening beneath the behavior and give both you and your child practical tools that can carry into everyday life.
Together, we can help your child learn to understand and manage their emotions, build confidence and resilience, strengthen relationships, and develop the skills they need to navigate challenges as they grow. For parents and caregivers, therapy can also provide a place to gain insight, learn new strategies, and feel more confident responding to your child's needs.
Most importantly, you don't have to figure it all out alone.
If you're wondering whether counseling might be a good fit for your child or family, I invite you to reach out for a free consultation. It would be an honor to partner with you in helping your child build strong, healthy roots for the years ahead.
Hello, I’m Shawna Ewing, M.Ed., LPC, CFRS
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in work with children and adolescents ages 3 through 18. I’m passionate about helping children and families navigate emotional, behavioral, developmental, and relationship challenges with compassion, practical support, and a strong focus on connection.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent 14 years working in public education, including roles as a special education teacher and school counselor. That experience continues to shape the way I work with children and families today. I understand how closely emotional well-being, behavior, relationships, and school experiences can be connected, and I value working collaboratively with parents and caregivers to understand the whole child.
My areas of focus include anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation, behavioral concerns, trauma, school-related difficulties, family transitions, divorce, and parent-child relationship challenges. I also have specialized experience supporting families navigating high-conflict dynamics and reunification/reconciliation work.
My approach is individualized and developmentally appropriate, drawing from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including:
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed interventions
Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Trauma-informed approaches
Play-based therapy
Parent coaching and family support
I believe lasting change happens through strong relationships and collaboration. My goal is not only to help children develop the skills they need to manage emotions, build confidence, and navigate challenges, but also to help parents feel better equipped to understand and support their child outside of the therapy office.
If you’re wondering whether counseling might be a good fit for your child or family, I’d be happy to talk with you. Please call or email to schedule a free consultation. I look forward to learning more about your family and how I may be able to help.

Parent and Caregiver Support & Coaching
Parenting can be both deeply rewarding and incredibly challenging. Even with the best intentions, it is not always easy to know how to respond when your child is struggling with big emotions, challenging behaviors, anxiety, school concerns, or changes within the family.
Many parents and caregivers come to therapy looking for guidance, reassurance, and practical strategies they can actually use in everyday life. My goal is to provide a supportive, judgment-free space where we can work together to better understand what may be happening beneath your child’s behavior and identify approaches that fit both your child and your family.
Parent support may include:
Understanding the “why” behind your child’s behavior
Learning practical and effective behavior-management strategies
Strengthening the parent-child relationship
Supporting emotional regulation and coping skills at home
Navigating anxiety, ADHD, autism, and other developmental or behavioral concerns
Addressing school-related challenges
Supporting children through divorce, grief, trauma, and other life transitions
Building greater confidence and consistency in your parenting approach
Improving communication and connection within the family
I believe parents and caregivers are among the most important influences in a child’s life. When parents feel more confident, supported, and better able to understand what their child needs, meaningful change can extend far beyond the therapy office.
You do not have to have all the answers before reaching out. Whether your child is currently participating in therapy or you are simply looking for guidance and support as a parent, I would be honored to walk alongside you and your family.
Meet Lulu!
Therapy dogs can provide comfort and emotional support during counseling sessions, helping to reduce anxiety and create a safe environment for clients. Their calming presence encourages openness and fosters trust, making it easier for individuals to express their feelings and work through challenges. Additionally, the interaction with a therapy dog can promote mindfulness and grounding, enhancing the overall therapeutic experience.
Meet Lulu, my lovable 5-year-old Labradoodle and certified therapy dog. With her soft, curly coat and warm, friendly demeanor, she brings a sense of comfort and joy to our therapy sessions. Lulu has been trained to provide emotional support and companionship, making her an invaluable part of the healing process.

My individual practice primarily focuses on children and adolescents under the age of 18. Because parents and caregivers play such an important role in a child’s growth, I also meet with parents or guardians of current clients when additional support, consultation, or guidance would be helpful.
Brief parent updates are a regular part of my work with children and are provided as clinically appropriate. When a parent consultation requires more than approximately 10 minutes, I may recommend scheduling a separate parent session, which is billed at my regular session rate.
Parent sessions may include discussing concerns at home or school, understanding behaviors and emotional needs, developing parenting strategies, and finding ways to support the skills your child is working on in therapy.
